Last week, Miss C. completed all three of her Pathway Reader books for first grade. Because it has been such a hum drum spring because of the coronavirus, we decided to make it an event! We had a book party and a field trip on Wednesday to commemorate finishing these books and moving on to the second-grade readers.

Just for fun, I found images of the books online. I printed them on my Brother Printer and then had Miss C. past them to heavy card stock. We used them to decorate cupcakes that we made and frosted together. Miss C. did the sprinkles all by herself.

As a little gift, I also gave her three new Usborne books including Aesop’s Fables, Mother Goose Nursery Rhymes, and a Logic Book for Kids. She was very pleased with all of them.

Then we took a family trip over to Stan Hywet Manor and Gardens. The gardens and grounds are open and free to the public. You have to keep “social distancing” but you don’t have to wear a mask.

It’s disappointing not to be able to go through the great manor, but the grounds are gorgeous and the kids had never toured them. We had been there before to watch Shakespeare performances, but never to look at the actual grounds themselves.

My favorite part was the beautiful statuary and the whimsical fountains. What a joy!

Despite the fact that our lives are turned upside down with the over reaching and outrageous government overreach to the coronavirus, there are still two big events coming up this weekend that are important to celebrate and commemorate with your families as best you can.

This is Memorial Day Weekend. I will refrain from venting about how ridiculous it is that the boy scouts weren’t allowed to put flags on the graves of deceased veterans this year. The vets sacrificed for our freedoms, which we have so easily given up … but I digress. If you have a chance to get the cemetery to say a prayer for our veterans, that would be a great activity for your family.

Might be a good weekend to try the FREE TRIAL with Notgrass History to check out their resources for learning about American History. I always think it’s fun to try to teach the kids about the history of what we do in our faith and community!

It’s also the weekend we celebrate the Feast of the Ascension. I have some ideas for celebrating that here.
