Spread the love

We have been having a very bitter winter this year. The snow keeps falling but never melts, and the temperatures have challenged the older water pipes all over the city. Now the weather people are telling us this arctic blast is going to sit over the Great Lakes and Ohio Valley area for a few more days before the temperatures go up – which will ensure a lot of flooding and slush as the snow melts and has no where to go.

Through it all I have been remembering Laura Ingalls Wilder’s book, The Long Winter. I think about it when I can get out of a hot shower and bring a weather report up on my phone as I’m getting dressed. That’s a blessing that the Ingalls family could never have imagined. Laura and her family never knew when a life-threatening blizzard might pop up. I can decide to eat or prolong my fast for a few more hours. Laura and her family had to eat what they could when the could, particularly through that awful winter of 1880-1881. The contrasts are just between our lives are so drastic, yet not really all that long ago. Laura was middle-aged when my grandparents were born. She died just four months before Mr. Pete was born! From the perspective of world history, she is practically a contemporary!

Over the years, I have written a bit about Laura and the Little House Books. To commemorate her 159th birthday, I am linking them here!

In my memories – the year we were reading Farmer Boy as a family.
