The almost back to school edition

1.  Amazon is offering an Amazon Prime 30-Day Free Trial. I gotta admit that I was skeptical of Amazon Prime when it first came out and was reluctant to try it. But I have saved so much money in shipping and entertainment costs every year that it really pays for itself.

Here are some ways I save for my homeschool:

  • Books. I always check out Amazon for discounts on books and textbooks. Sometimes if I can find the book second hand but with shipping, I still go with the prime book because the shipping is free and the cost is about the same. 
  • Streaming movies – especially ones about science or history that will make learning more fun and interesting for my students.
  • School supplies – look for sales on Amazon, plan ahead, and save on shipping. 
  • Special foods – I am on a special diet for my ulcerative colitis. When I need special flours or other items, I know I can find them on Amazon and have them shipped quickly to my door. This saves me time in shopping for these items in the store and I save on shipping when I buy Prime items. 

Today I found out that Amazon Prime members will have special discounts at Whole Foods – and since Whole Foods is moving into my neighborhood, I’ll be sure to take advantage of that extra savings as well. As an added bonus, this will also help me find items for my special grain-free ulcerative colitis diet.

2. Amazaon’s Audible is running a promotion. Try Audible and Get Two Free Audiobooks.

I use Audible in my homeschool all the time, but I particularly use it a lot with any of my students who are slower readers. When your child reads below grade level, but you still want to expose them to literature at higher levels, using audio books read by professional narrators is a real gift!

But I also use Audible with my gifted readers. Sometimes, it’s just nice to listen to a story together – and that’s particularly true on long road trips!   Here is a sample of some of the books I have in my Audible library.

3.  I already purchase most of the college textbooks my student needs from Amazon. Amazon for students is another way for my college student to be more independent and save money on the items he needs for school.

4.  One of the books that helped me the most on my homeschool journey came from Julie Bogart at Bravewriter.  The Writer’s Jungle (available in the Bravewriter Store) opened my eyes to a new and different way of teaching writing. For my natural writers, it allowed more freedom than prepackaged curricula. It gave my struggling writers a place to start. As their mother and teacher – it gave me hope! I highly recommend this book for anyone starting their homeschool journey, or anyone who needs a little help teaching students how to write.

5.  There are also openings in Bravewriter online courses.   My children have taken a variety of these including The Writer’s Jungle, Aesop’s Fables, Shakespeare, and SAT writing prep.  These are a little pricy, but I feel they really helped Noah with the college level writing that he is doing now.
