1. Read!!

january 2007 018

Choose stories related to the subjects you are studying in English, Social Studies, Science and especially History. Read the classics, or the new classics. Read stories that are of interest to you or that the kids are interested in. Read as a family, or make it part of your homeschool day, or let your independent readers have time to read on their own.

And if you can’t take time to read, or if your kids are not independent readers yet or have reading problems, use books on tape!

2. Take time for art! Illustrate what you read with pencils, crayons, chalk, or perhaps sculpture. Let the imagination and creative juices flow with a little spark from a bit of literature!

3. Do arts and crafts that have meaning for your family or that are incorporated into your lessons! We have been making spoon saints through the liturgical year as we study the lives of the saints. But as you can see, they also add a little something special to our potted plants and our table!

4. Add exercise, especially outdoor exercise! It gets them out into nature, it is good for their bodies and it clears their minds! This is particularly important for energetic boys, but it’s good for girls too!

5. Have some fun in the kitchen!! Let them make desert, or plan a meal and do all of the planning, shopping and preparation (dare I say clean up too!) Kids really love this and it’s part of the life lessons we want them to have!

6. Watch some good movies together and discuss them with your children! Plan a movie day or a movie night as a family. Pick out the plot, the protagonist and the antagonist. What is the moral?

7. Enroll your kids in community classes or programs at the library. If your community has these things, they are usually a low cost way to add some variety and zip into your homeschool day.

10. Learn to relax!
