I have to admit that I really really really hate getting all the paper work done for the homeschool requirements in my state.  It’s not that they are overly burdensome, or that I dislike planning.  It’s more a sense that it’s all a waste of time.  I am utterly and totally convinced that I give the school district my paper work, they check off my name, and then promptly file it all in the circular file on the floor!

My first year (mind you with only 1 child doing kindergarten) I SLAVED over getting just the right book list and presenting it in a compelling and convincing manner so that the powers that be would be impressed and thrilled that I was making such an effort to educate my child with such a well thoughout out and interesting curriculum. ..uh… right..  I got a form letter telling me it was okay to homeschool that school year.

As years went by I continued to put a lot of work into it.  Eventually one of my friends told me that instead of trying to create her own outline of the curriculum, she just sent photocopies of the contents pages.  So I started doing that.  It still took time and now it took extra money!!  But I thought at least if someone looked at what I sent in, I would be content.

But then one year, I totally forgot to send in any mention of my 8th grader’s math.  I didn’t copy the book and I did not mention it on my book list.  When I discovered my omission, I was mortified.   I tried to call the superintendent’s office to explain but after being on hold for 5 minutes, I decided to write a detailed letter instead.  Before I got it mailed however, my yearly form letter giving me “permission” to homeschool came in the mail.  Essentially they had given me permission to teach my 8th grade child without a math curriculum?

Since then I have been tempted to put things in to see if they catch them, but with my luck that would be the year they decide to do a REAL audit and I’d get caught.

But I have pared down what I do.  This year I did not put 20 hours of work into pulling this all together and I spent maybe 5 minutes at the copy machine tops!!  And I think I came up with a pretty good curriculum!   Take a peak!
