It’s been a good week for my family at My Domestic Church. We had two feast days this week. My husband Peter of course, and my son Calvin Peter had their feast day. Ever since I started trying to “live” the liturgical year I have had fish on their feast day. But this year, with money being a little tight I didn’t want to spend the extra on fresh fish. Instead, my Samthesecond son decided to make a desert from scratch.

Sam has been having oodles of fun with this cookbook I picked up at an estate sale. It is a reprint of the 1934 Hershey’s Chocolate Cookbook. All chocolate- all the time! He decided to make the chocolate chiffon pie which looked yummy in the picture. So we forged ahead, and I think Sam learned a few new things, like how to separate egg yolks from the whites, why we no longer make whipped cream from scratch (because it involves uncooked egg whites), and that gelatin comes in unflavored!! The pie was delicious, albeit a little rich, but I guess they didn’t have cholesterol back in 1934.

Sam’s feast day was yesterday as he is Samuel Thomas! Every year for that we have made St. Thomas Day Cookies. Basically it’s just a sugar cookie with the five wounds of Christ portrayed with either red frosting or red candies to commemorate St. Thomas touching Christ’s wounds and then believing in the Resurrection. I use to make the sugar cookies from scratch, but as Sam got older and I had more children, we graduated to the Pillsbury cookies you just slice and bake.

But this year Sam wanted to make something out of that Hershey’s cookbook. Now, you have to understand my son Sam. That boy is called to be in the kitchen somehow. I also think he might have a priestly vocation and I am going to thoroughly enjoying watching how the Lord works out these two desires in my son’s heart. Anyway, ever since he could drag a chair into the kitchen he has been cooking. People give him cookbooks for birthdays, Christmas, etc. While other kids might read stories before bed, Sam is reading cookbooks. Did I mention he’s only 11?

OK so I told Sam he could make something out of the Hershey’s cookbook, (because I’d have to be nuts to turn down a chocolate desert!) BUT!! it had to have the five wounds of Christ on it somehow. So Sam made a beautiful Chocolate Crumb Cake from scratch and when it was done it had a nice white crust on top of it. We made our wounds with cherry pie filling which looked beautiful, and tasted great!

Yesterday I also made our belated sea food main dish for my St. Peter’s Name sake. We had a seafood pizza which is fast, easy, not too expensive. It’s just a ready made pizza crust topped with crab meat and shrimp (I couldn’t find any tiny shrimp this year), mozzarella and cheddar cheese, pineapple, mushrooms, and olives, baked until the cheese melts. That with some cottage cheese, and our St. Thomas Day Crumb Cake – that was our special feasting for the week!!
