Last weekend my family and I had a chance to sit down and watch We Are Marshall together and all of us enjoyed it very much!

In 1970 the entire Marshall Football Team, much of the coaching staff and some prominent citizens were killed in an airplane crash in West Virginia. I did some looking around after the movie and found these sites for more information.

The movie starts at the end of the team’s last devastating football loss followed by the ill-fated charted plane ride. Director McG gives the audience a real sense of the shock and grief experienced by the entire community as well as the individual colleagues, family members, team mates and loved ones.

But the real story starts with the determination of players who were not on the flight, to carry on for their teammates and keep the football tradition alive at Marshall. This movie is about a team and a community that rose from the ashes, about a community that carried on in dignity and strength.

I’m not a huge football fan, but I did find myself engrossed in the game re-enacted at the end of the movie. Even my little girls were interested in the characters and what was happening. The guys in the family enjoyed the sporting aspect as well as the human interest story.

A side note as a homeschooler, the DVD we received from Netflix also had a travelogue – tpe of commercial for West Virginia before the movie. Since my kid are studying each state, I found that part of the DVD to be just as enjoyable and informative as the rest of the presentation. I never knew West Virginia was so beautiful and had so many mountain related activities – and it’s so much closer than the Rockies!

If your looking for a good film that the entire family can enjoy, you might want to consider this one. It is rated PG for some language and emotion and also the crash scene might be too intense for some of the younger kids.We gave it 7 thumbs up (Rosie doesn’t vote yet!).
