1. The big news in the Catholic World this week is the sexual abuse scandal 3.0. I’m not going to rehash it, but Simcha Fisher wrote about it beautifully.

2. I had to write a chapter for a book proposal this week. It had to be 3000 words long but no longer than 5000.  I originally thought, “piece of cake!” But what I learned is that all of these years of blogging have given me the gift of succinctness. It was actually hard to write that many words on one focused topic. I really had to S T R E T C H things out and add a lot of detail. We’ll see how it goes.

3.  Izzy and I are watching This Is Us together on Hulu.  It had been touted as a heartwarming family show and there are indeed many touching moments in it.

But there is also a lot of pre-marital sex that sort of gets passed off as normal. No one raises an eyebrow about it. And I can’t help but think how ironic that all is in the shadow of the prophetic Humanae Vitae that warned us that values would fall.  How far would they fall? for that, I give you the Bachelorette.

Everything therefore in the modern means of social communication which arouses men’s baser passions and encourages low moral standards, as well as every obscenity in the written word and every form of indecency on the stage and screen, should be condemned publicly and unanimously by all those who have at heart the advance of civilization and the safeguarding of the outstanding values of the human spirit. It is quite absurd to defend this kind of depravity in the name of art or culture (25) or by pleading the liberty which may be allowed in this field by the public authorities.

4.  I have been watching the Bachelorette on Hulu by myself. I had seen things on the internet about Becka, this season’s Bachelorette, and I felt sorry for her after her bad on-screen breakup with last year’s Bachelor, Ari.

Anyway, last week was the overnight dates for the Bachelorette and her three final guys. And this wasn’t, “Let’s sit up all night and talk and get to know each other better.” The show made no effort to disguise the fact that our girl Becka was having sex with her chosen guys. One right after the other. Except that for some reason, she couldn’t bring herself to do an overnight with her second guy and she sent him away at dinner. Maybe that was her conscience speaking? maybe she just wasn’t that into him? I don’t know.

But here’s the really weird thing about this season’s Bachelorette. There were two scandals on the show. One was that her favorite guy so far had “Liked” some conservative posts on social media! The second was that one of her top guys was still a virgin.

It’s like living in upside down world. It’s exactly what Pope Paul VI was afraid of.

5. For contrast, see this charming opening scene from Katie The Farmer’s Daughter in 1963.
