1. For the second time in my life, I found myself sitting with my sister, in a hospital waiting room, watching families leave as surgeons came in to talk to them about their loved ones. The first time was in 1998 when my mom was having a 15 hour surgery to remove a benign albeit HUGE meningioma. Yesterday’s surgery wasn’t that long, but she didn’t get into recovery until after 8 p.m. There was a certain familiarity to the situation. There was a feeling between my sister and me that we had done this before, we could do it now, and that all of us were going to be alright.

2. Mom’s surgeon/gynecologist/oncologist thought my sister and I both looked about ten years younger than we really are. This is the kind of levity one needs at a time like that!

3. My teenage sons and my teenage nephew, my middle schoolers, as well as my wannabe daughter-in-law (it’s me that “wanna her to be” my future daughter in law, she quite sensibly wants to wait a long time!) were all superb. They helped us pack up grandma’s apartment, they hauled furniture, they packed dishes, they threw away garbage, they filled up a UHaul truck, they were just great! And considering Calvin and Sarah and Paul gave up their scheduled free time to do it makes their efforts outstanding. These are some fantastic kids and I am so proud of them for seeing that their family needed their help and selflessly stepping up to getter done!
