My 10th grader, Sam, and I have been studying American History and getting him ready to take the CLEP test. As we were reading about the American Revolution, I was delighted to find Liberty! The American  Revolution available on Netflix.  This excellent program uses the words of our founding fathers, and others to make the story of our revolution come to life.  It is well done and held the attention of my high schooler as well as my middle school children.

While reading the history, the Stamp Act, Townshed Acts, and Intolerable Acts all seemed to blur together, but this DVD helped to put them in context and explained the unintended consequences of each British act and American response.  The second DVD spent considerable time on General John Burgoyne’s campaign down Lake Champlain and ending at the battle of Saratoga.  We heard the words of the General himself as well as from soldiers on both sides.  It really helped to see them as individuals, as people instead of dry historial figures in a history book!

We are anxious awaiting the third DVD from Netflix.  I would highly recommend this series to any students interested learning and understanding more about the American Revolution.

Also don’t forget the HBO series on John Adams. That is an excellent resource for this time period as well!
