Telling women that they should have more babies because their child might die someday is sick.

I wrote here

Is it sick? Or is it practical advice based on personal experience. Is it wrong? Or is that part of God’s design for families. Is that part of His design to soothe a mother’s heart?

My Texas troll (persistent little one too I might add!) wrote:

“Is it sick?” Well, yes, in the way that it would be sick to suggest that someone have two
spouses lest something happened to one.

So I found this blurb today about remarriage and widowhood:

Men who lose a spouse are several times more likely to remarry–in part because it is socially acceptable for them to choose younger mates .

I had heard that before. If a man has had a successful, loving marriage, he will seek a second marriage. I don’t think anyone suggests that is “sick.”

According to the 1990 U.S. Census, 10 percent of the women and 2.5 percent of men had lost a spouse (that information wasn’t collected for the 2000 Census). About 300,000 remarriages in the United States each year involve previously widowed brides or grooms.
