The New York Times has a film clip here of two couples with babies diagnosed in utero with fatal conditions. Both couples decide to go on and continue their pregnancies.

I have been a long-time advocate of pre-natal hospice and encouraging women to enjoy the lives of their babies regardless of how short those lives might be. I think good prenatal hospice systems could help families do just that.

Interestingly, both of the couples in this clip describe themselves as “pro-choice Catholics.” I wonder though if somehow their Catholicism and the idea of the value of all human life was instrumental in their decision making.

In the end, one of the fathes says that the birth of his trisomy 18 daughter has been a great gift, one that he never would have asked for, but one that hs brought him closer to his family and to his God. His words are so eloquent.

Interestingly, the NWT says that 20 to 40% of couples go on to birth their babies with these sorts of diagnoses. Maybe the pro-life message has been making an impact after all.
