As I have been writing about some of the Catholic bashing going on in some parts of the “Christian” blogosphere, a reader brought this to my attention.

Why is the color red associated with Valentine’s Day? Isaiah writes that “sins are like scarlet, . . . red like crimson” (Isaiah 1:18). adultery is known as the “scarlet sin” (recall the classic book by Nathaniel Hawthorne, The Scarlet Letter). Prostitution is practiced in the “red-light district.” The Bible describes certain princes of Babylon dressed in vermilion (Ezekiel 23:14-15). Babylon herself is a harlot dressed in scarlet (Revelation 17:4). Not suprisingly, the highest ranking priests of the Catholic church, the cardinals, wear red.

I posted a very polite, informational, FYI type of comment, which of course, never got published.

Simply, the cardinals are considered princes of the church and they wear red to symbolize their willingness to die for Christ and His church.

Interestingly, red is also the color of the Holy Spirit, which I note many Protestant churches also use during Pentocost.

So that’s the answer. It’s not as sexy as Mountain Mama’s, but it is historical and factual.
