A few years ago I had a brief glimpse into Phatmass when another blogger asked the gang from Phatmass not to bother him any more! I clicked on their page and found lots of good apologetics material. The Phorum seemed a little bit tricker for me. I realize that a lot of the folks participating there are very young, and I could probably be a mom to most of them! So the flashy sig lines and other shorthand lingo proved to me that I am probably on a faster track to old fogeydom than I had previously thought. Nonetheless they seemed very enthusiastic, and on fire for the faith, which was good.

Within the last two months I have had direct dealings with a couple of young people from Phatmass. One was on a Protestant blog, defending the faith against the rabid anti-Catholic rhetoric that was the norm there. The other was the blog of a Phatmass girl. The Protestant blog episode was interesting. The Phatmass apologist made no attempt to come along side the us older adults that had been commenting there first. He came in with guns blazing and unfortunately friendly fire ensued.

After a more detailed e-mail exchange with one particular young man from Phatmass, I came to some conclusions. I tend to feel that Phatmass apologists are sort of like young unbroken colts. They are wild, happy, talented, but also a tad irreverent and will mow anyone down that gets in their way, particularly if that someone is in the way of the hand that holds the sugar cubes. The sugar cube in this case is the chance to debate with non-Catholics. There are only so many sugar cubes, so the old nags and mares have to make way!!

You would not want to yoke one of these young ones to your wagon and indeed, I don’t think they can be yoked. My observation from these two brief encounters it that they don’t play well with others from the same herd and don’t like to be part of a team. Being teamed with an older, more experienced team mate would most likely make them both miserable!

However, a young colt is a beautiful thing to watch running wild and free in the field. For solo work, they are superb.

On that note, I refer you go the Of Christian Women blog in the side bar and her series on the Catholic Church for “bible Christians.” The bogger’s intent is to expose the Catholic Church as false. The John from Phatmass is doing an admirable job defending the church. While I have been tempted more than once to jump in and help, I keep reminding myself that there are few more thankless jobs than to attempt to be teamed with a youngster that does not care to be teamed. So I’m happy to graze on the sidelines. Still, it’s a beautiful thing to watch this one run.

On a similar note, the sister blog to Of Christian Women, MzEllen and Co, (also in the side bar) had a series on the book of Nehemiah this week. She asks the rhetorical question: “Is there somebody who might jeer at you?”

Yes Ellen. Catholics get jeered at all the time with comments like “recovering Catholic,” “Trapped in the church” “false doctrines” “papists” etc. etc. Thanks for asking.
