I finally got to go to the boys’ cross country meet! It was my first time ever to watch Noah, my 8-year-old compete and he was awesome! I really think distance running is going to be his thing. He just looked so natural at it! He did not set a personal record but he was within 2 seconds of his previous record setting time and the coach said that was good because it shows consistency.

Gabriel, Gabriel… he did okay too. Gabriel has always been a big boy. At birth he was almost 11 pounds and he has stayed big his entire life. He is just off of the growth chart for weight and in the 99th percentile for height. So clearly he does not have a runner’s body. Yet he ran the entire 1 1/2 miles and finished respectably in the middle of the pack. I was very proud of him.

Sam took 40 seconds off his past time which the coach said was huge. He looked awesome and finished 19th out of the pack of I’m gonna guess maybe 40 or more kids.

What is grieving my mother’s heart tonight is the turmoil of what he will do next year for high school. I love homeschooling Sam and he would like to homeschool, but the truth is athletic opportunities are harder to come by in high school unless you have the money to put your child on more elite teams separate from the school system. To run track or swim, Sam needs to be in school. I just don’t know if that’s the best option for him or if I am giving too much weight to athletics. A lot of our decision will depend on how the school levy does next month.

In the meantime though they have four more meets and I hope to enjoy each of them thoroughly!
