Young ladies these days apparently do not have any qualms about calling boys on the phone. For the last three years, young ladies have boldly called Calvin on his phone, left messages on my voice mail, and even started texting him when I bought him his own pay-as-you-go cell phone! And Calvin is enjoying the attention.

Calvin also enjoyed the attention of many nice young women in his Lifeguard/First Aid class that he just completed. If they were to pair up, Calvin had his pick of partners. Need to rescue a drowning swimmer? No problem. Two or three would jump in the pool waiting for Calvin to rescue them. Getting the girl does not appear to ever be a problem he is ever going to face!

Friday was Jesus day at our church. That means all the 2nd graders had to spend the day doing crafts and other stuff to get ready for their first communion day. One of the things they had to do was to actually practice receiving the host and the precious blood. The lady who was supposed to facilitate this was sick that day and I found out about an hour before hand that I was going to have to put the 2nd graders through their paces. Now I have issues with women priests and girl altar servers anyway, so there was no way I was going to stand there and be the pretend “priestess” handing out communion to these impressionable little people. Instead, I ran home and promised Calvin two McDonald’s Filet-O-Fish if he would play priest for a day and help me out with these little first communicants.

I have to tell you, watching my young man standing their with the chalice, holding the host and saying, “Body of Christ.” It just took my breath away. I now totally understand why mothers in days of yore wished to see their sons become priests. I just sood there thinking what a fine priest Calvin would be and what a sharp figure he would cut in a Roman Collar or a black cassock!

On the way over to McDonalds for payback time, we had this discussion.

“Cal, you made a fine looking priest up there today!”

“Yea, it was kind of fun.”

“Did it give you any thoughts about maybe looking into the seminary after high school.?”

“No, I don’t think so mom. I’m still pretty interested in girls.”

I don’t know what made me say what I said next!

“You know, lots of young ladies are interested in young priests. Something about forbidden fruit they find attractive.”

Without missing a beat Calvin replied:

“Yea, but I still want to be edible!”

I so love having these conversations!
