By looking at centuries of data on women and the age at which they gave birth, the researchers found that the age of the earliest child and the total number of children had little impact on longevity. The age at which mothers stopped having children, however, proved significant.

The new study suggests a link between women’s overall aging and the aging of their reproductive system. Rather than slowing aging, having children late in life may be a sign of overall physical robustness.
