Ugh… I sat down to my friendly little computer this morning at 6:00 a.m., opened my e-mail and found another long letter about the Catholic Carnival! Maybe some of you didn’t even know there was a dispute. I wish I didn’t, but because I have been a frequent contributor in the past, I got ALL the e-mails a week or so ago about the first dispute and then I got another one today.

It seems that one of the contributers decided to rock the boat and post a link to a blog article criticizing the pope’s language in discussing same-sex marriage. That ticked off a lot of conservative contributors but the piece was withdrawn, apologies made, and then that was the end of it.

I guess yesterday then, someone critiqued the offending piece from the week before on the carnival – and the dead horse started showing signs of life!

My take? It was bound to happen. “Catholic” in this country doesn’t mean following necessarily the “sure norm” of the catechism. In fact in the west it means relying heavily on one little piece of the catechism Paragraph 1782 aka the conscience clause. That flavor of Catholicism was bound to hit the Christian Carnival sooner or later.

It’s probably time to set up concrete guidelines for the carnival. That would certainly make life easier for the hosts. I don’t think I would ever consider hosting it here without someting clear and in writing.
