The Prizewinner of Defiance Ohio

This is a very cute little book that I heard about on National Public Radio a few weeks ago (but I didn’t hold that against the author!! ha ha). It’s a true story about a family in the 1940s and 1950s with 10 kids and an alcoholic dad that is having difficulty making ends meet, and a mom with a gift for language who meets the family’s needs by winning contests! Remember back then the contests were about writing essays, or poems or jingles and this lady won hundreds of them. I’ll share some of my favorites a little later on but if you have a chance to get the book, I highly recommend this one!
