When Calvin was growing up I couldn’t afford to own a camera. I used mostly little disposable cameras or the very old Argus film camera I inherited from my grandma which was older than me! I spent a lot of money on prints that just weren’t quite as nice as I wanted them to be or that were really bad to begin with, but of course I didn’t know that until I had them developed.

So I was very enthusiastic about digital cameras when they came out, but I couldn’t afford those either. A good friend comped Mr. Pete with one when his company gave him a new one to use for his work. We used that for years and then a few years ago we bought a point and shoot Panasonic. A lot of my pictures on my blog are from the Panasonic.

But it certainly had its limitations too and as the kids got into more and more things, particularly sports, I knew that I wanted a better camera to capture the memories. I was a little afraid of going to a DSLR type of camera
, but I had received enough encouragement from my other photographs that I knew my next camera had to be a step up and not just a lateral move.

After consulting with a couple of friends of mine who take professional photos, I bought the Pentax K2000 10.2MP Digital SLR Camera. My research told me that this camera was a good bridge for a photographer like me who was going from a point and shoot to the DSLR and after a few missteps, I have to say that I am very happy with it and delighted with the pictures. Besides ease of use, I also like the Pentax because the body is designed to be sturdy and hold up well, which is a must for a busy household like mine and for trying to take pictures in crowded areas such as cross country meets.

I bought my camera on eBay and got a sweet deal that included two lenses a tripod and some other stuff. But I’ve noticed the price has come down on both eBay and Amazon and there might even be local deals on this camera now that it’s been on the market for a year.

So for a busy mom who wants to explore photography a little more but still needs an easy to use camera, I would definitely recommend this Pentax.

Here’s one of my favorite shots from this fall’s Cross Country Season.
