I can’t believe that my first baby is going to be 20 years old this summer! And he is already out of high school and working in the community as an EMT, being of service to others. It went by so quickly!!

But 20 years ago, when I was pregnant for the first time there were not many resources for moms and I found out that because I didn’t know what my options were, when I ended up at the hospital in labor – I didn’t have any!! What I didn’t realize was that my whole lifetime up until that point, but particularly during my 9 months of pregnancy, seeds of doubt had been planted in my brain about my ability to birth my baby without “help.” It started at the beginning with my mother’s terrible birth stories (which I am determined NOT TO DO to my own daughters!) and continued as I watched my normal friends go in to have babies only to be told that their pelvises were too small and they needed to have their babies surgically delivered!

So when it was my turn, I too stepped on that conveyor belt of medical interventions that lead to the Cesarean birth of my first son.

Moving ahead 20 years and Calvin and his girlfriend Sarah are a darling couple. She doesn’t put up with any of his crap; he adores her. I could easily see a wedding in the future. A few weeks ago Calvin shared with me though that Sarah is definitely afraid of childbirth. And why shouldn’t she be! The Cesarean rate has gone up to almost 30%. And birth on t.v. and in the media is always portrayed as a medical emergency and painful to the edge of human endurance. Maybe now even more than before young women are being told that they can’t do this and that birth is a horrible experience.

So I am pleasantly pleased to see that the makers of The Business of Being Born, have continued to work to make women aware and empower them in their birthing choices. They have a blog now written by doctors, midwives, nurses and regular moms. What a wonderful place to get good information, support and encouragement! I would definitely encourage any young woman thinking of marriage and motherhood to check it out and get all of their questions answered here. This is the resource I wish I had had when I started out.
