For as long as I could remember,my grandmother ALWAYS wore an apron. Every day, for as long as she was alive at home, she put on a housedress and an apron. It was how she felt the most comfortable. My Greatgrandmother Wertie, (who was in her 90s when I knew her) also always wore an apron. She always wore a housedress, put her hair up in a bun, and then donned her apron! In my mind, to be domestic, was to wear an apron.

Before I had kids, when I worked outside of the home, I didn’t own an apron. I wore old clothes when I cleaned, which was always once a week on the weekend. I didn’t even know where to buy an apron and frankly, it was not even on my radar screen of things to own.

About five years ago though, I was visiting Wythville, Virginia for a medical transcription symposium. This symposium was one of the friendliest, “homiest,” most down to earth I had ever attended. Everyone seemed so genuinely glad to have us there, they served homemade food, and even said grace before the main meal! (I have never seen that before or since at a professional event.) It was more about fellowship than “continuing education.” The vendors present seemed to follow that philosophy as well. And one of the vendors, was a lady who made aprons and sold them.

Now one thing about me I haven’t blogged too much about, I like Holstein cows. I grew up on a dairy farm and I use to milk and care for Holsteins. So it’s a bit of nostalgia for me to collect Holstein figurines and other items. As I was looking at this lady’s homemade aprons, I cam came across this fun Holstein cow apron, and new that I had to have it.

It has been well worn and loved since then. It can be worn with the otherside out, which is a plain old blue. That side gets most of the wear, tear and staining. But for a special occasion, just to make my kids laugh, I’ll turn it around and wear the cow side out!

Barbara Curtis is running an apron contest, and that inspired me to take a picture of the apron and turn it in. Barbara’s contest also inspired me to consider broadening my apron repertoire – expand the apron wardrobe so to speak. Last week I picked up this pattern off of e-Bay with the hope of making some aprons that are just a tad bit more feminine for entertaining.

Thanks to Barbara, I also started to keep my eyes open for all things “apron.” I came across this blog dedicated to the apron- Tie one On! (cute name!)

I’ll be sending this on to Barb, but be sure to stop over to Mommy Life and see the other entries!
