Personhood

Could someone please explain to me what "personhood" is? Where is "personhood" defined in Catholic theology specifically in regard to the newly conceived and the elderly and/or disabled (i.e. Terri Schiavo). I'm looking for specific defined Catholic doctrine. I realize Acquinas had some theories on this but those remain his personal thoughts and not accepted church doctrine.

Thanks much.
