Writing a letter to your confirmation candidate

It seems that one of the biggest events in confirmation preparation in this country is the letters of support to be given to the confirmation candidates during their mandatory retreats.

I have three such letters saved on this blog:

I've asked my children what they remember about the letter they got from me and their dad, and also what they remembered about the letters they received.
The answer was not much, or at least nothing specific. In general they were happy to have gotten a bag full of letters and there was a sense of feeling loved and supported. I guess that's the main thing - for them to have a sense that this is an important step in their spiritual growth, and that people they know, love and respect have taken the time out of their lives to let them know that! So here are some tips on procuring and writing letters for young confirmation candidates. Start thinkin…

Baptism of the Lord

John the Baptist baptizing Jesus

Sunday is the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord.

When Rosie was very little, I once asked her,  "Rosie, since Jesus was God and God is all good, why did Jesus want to be baptized?"

And without missing a beat she replied, "Because He wanted to show us it was safe!"

She's wasn't wrong.

One of the reasons Christ came to us in the incarnation was to show us how to live. For a Christian, one of the most important parts of living a Christian life is being Baptised.

The Catechism of the Catholic Church tells us that Christ's baptism was the inauguration of his mission as God's suffering servant.

And so it is for each no Christian at Baptism. Certainly, life is full of its share of suffering, but through Baptism, we are released from original sin and we start sharing in the life of Christ.

As parents and grandparents, once our children are baptized it is on us to teach them about God and what it means to be a Christian and live a Christian Life.

Things to do:

  • Today would be a good day to look at each other's Baptismal certificates.
  • Look at pictures from Baptism days and share memories of that day.
  • White cupcakes or cake would be a nice touch for dinner today.
  • Watch this excerpt from Jesus of Nazareth.
