Writing a letter to your confirmation candidate

It seems that one of the biggest events in confirmation preparation in this country is the letters of support to be given to the confirmation candidates during their mandatory retreats.

I've asked my children what they remember about the letter they got from me and their dad, and also what they remembered about the letters they received.
The answer was not much, or at least nothing specific. In general they were happy to have gotten a bag full of letters and there was a sense of feeling loved and supported. I am thinking...
about my father-in-law. He was a scout for Patton and participated in the campaign in Africa and Italy before being in the second wave in Normandy. His group suffered heavy casualties when a bomb burst overhead. When they went around collecting the dog tabs after the battle, someone went to grab his and noticed that he was still a live. He was saved and was able to recover enough to get married and have 9 children - one of which was my husband, Mr. Pete.

I am thankful...
for the observant eye of the man pulling the dog tags!

I am pondering...

Before the holiday, two of Mr. Pete's cousins cleaned up the grave sites of all five brothers and made sure to plant some flowers!  They do this every year and I think that is such a beautiful tradition.

Mr. Pete cooked ribs all day on the grill for Memorial Day.  I've got to figure out the rest of the week. I'm thinking quiche for Tuesday night.
