Outside my window…

Despite its best efforts to destroy the beauty of spring, the snow and cold from last week did NOT destroy my tulips.

It did do a number on my magnolia tree though.

I am thinking…
about how unlucky my family tends to be with track season.  Rosie gained 30 seconds on her 1600 meter race yesterday because her ankles were killing her. I’m pretty sure she has tendinitis. After resting this week she will probably miss the rest of the season because really, how can you rest for two weeks, come back and be competitive?

Long time readers will know that my son missed two track seasons because of a stress fracture one year and a broken clavicle his jr. year.  So apparently the tradition will continue with Rosie.

Don’t get me wrong- I hate track season with the passion I only felt possible for swim meets. Missing the rest of track season (which includes driving miles away to the distant track to practice and then losing Sunday afternoon to lengthy track meets) makes me giddy with joy.  But runners have to run track to be competitive with cross country. I’m just hoping she can heal completely, find a way to avoid further injury, and be ready for summer conditioning.

I am thankful…

for the solemnity of Holy Week – though sorry for the loss of Christian lives in Egypt over the weekend.

I am pondering…
the concert I was in yesterday at church. Our parish choir performed The 7 Last Words of Christ by Dubois. We had the entire choir plus a small string section, timpani, oboist, three vocal soloists, a conductor and our pipe organ. It was crowded.

As the musicians began to arrive I noted that they were greeting each other as if they were old friends and colleagues. So I asked the nice violinist behind me if they all played in a group together or something and she said, “Yes, The Akron Symphony.”

I was a little mortified.  Was I out of my league? Would I be outed as an imposter and the only non- professional player in this chamber orchestra? Could I be able to measure up?

Don’t get me wrong- these folks were very kind and personable. My discomfort was of my own making. Once the music started though, I was at ease. All the practice and preparation paid off as did listening to many versions of the piece on CD and Youtube. I knew this piece well and that really helped me a lot, especially in the last section. I think I held my own pretty well and I got some positive feedback.

I am hearing…
Rosie talking in the dining room downstairs.

In the kitchen…
Meatloaf – Rosie mixed all of the spices together and made the glaze again. It was delicious. She only has to do this one more time and I think she’ll be able to do it without a recipe from now on!

I am wearing…
a skort – finally!!  Something more spring like than long pants and boots!

 Even in pain, she’s gorgeous.
