Writing a letter to your confirmation candidate

It seems that one of the biggest events in confirmation preparation in this country is the letters of support to be given to the confirmation candidates during their mandatory retreats.

I have three such letters saved on this blog:

I've asked my children what they remember about the letter they got from me and their dad, and also what they remembered about the letters they received.
The answer was not much, or at least nothing specific. In general they were happy to have gotten a bag full of letters and there was a sense of feeling loved and supported. I guess that's the main thing - for them to have a sense that this is an important step in their spiritual growth, and that people they know, love and respect have taken the time out of their lives to let them know that! So here are some tips on procuring and writing letters for young confirmation candidates. Start thinkin…

Outside my window...

This year as I walk along the tow path every morning, I have been delighted to come across this deer and her two fawns just about every morning!

I am thinking...

How neat it was to see old friends at the wedding.  Here is Mr. Pete with two of his buddies.  They have known each other since second grade.  So how do you keep old friends close?  You have one marry your sister and make the other one a godfather to your child!

I am thankful...

LaVictoire reunion 2010
for my brother-in-law Joe!  Who always plans the family reunion, comes to all of the family weddings and even came to my mom's funeral.  He truly is a sweet and giving man.  He had a heart attack over the weekend just as he was getting ready for this year's reunion. Hopefully they caught it in time and he will make a good recovery.  The whole family is keeping him in their prayers.

I have...
donated money to Melissa and Aaron Klein, the bakers in Oregon who were charged the outrageous fine of $135,000 because they refused to bake a $200 wedding cake for a lesbian wedding. The Kleins had done work for the same-sex couple before, including a wedding cake for one of their mothers.  They simply did not wish to be associated with a gay wedding, and for that they were penalized.  If you care to donate - here's the link.

A quote to share...

The five Justices who compose today’s majority are entirely comfortable concluding that every State violated the Constitution for all of the 135 years between the Fourteenth Amendment’s ratification and Massachusetts’ permitting of same-sex marriages in 2003. They have discovered in the Fourteenth Amendment a ‘fundamental right’ overlooked by every person alive at the time of ratification, and almost everyone else in the time since. They see what lesser legal minds—minds like Thomas Cooley, John Marshall Harlan, Oliver Wendell Holmes, Jr., Learned Hand, Louis Brandeis, William Howard Taft, Benjamin Cardozo, Hugo Black, Felix Frankfurter, Robert Jackson, and Henry Friendly—could not. They are certain that the People ratified the Fourteenth Amendment to bestow on them the power to remove questions from the democratic process when that is called for by their ‘reasoned judgment.’ These Justices know that limiting marriage to one man and one woman is contrary to reason; they know that an institution as old as government itself, and accepted by every nation in history until 15 years ago, cannot possibly be supported by anything other than ignorance or bigotry. And they are willing to say that any citizen who does not agree with that, who adheres to what was, until 15 years ago, the unanimous judgment of all generations and all societies, stands against the Constitution.”  Justice Antonin Scalia
