The homeschool dance dress code and the Bachelorette

On Saturday, Izzy will be going to the homeschool dance for the very first time! She is so excited (much more so than her brothers I might add). But she is also concerned about what she is going to wear – you see there is a pretty stringent dress code for girls in the hope of maintaining ladylike modesty.

Last night, we watched the premiere of the Bachelorette.   When Emily Maynard, this season’s Bachelorette, showed up in this glittery frock, Izzy promptly noticed that it broke almost all of the homeschool Dance Dress Guidelines!!

So to illustrate how two worlds clash, let me illustrate with pictures and the guidelines.

 Ladies:  – Wear a modest, formal, or semi-formal dress. – No very short dresses.  Hem of dress and/or any slits should be no higher than a couple of inches above the knee. 

(well, at least this was a long gown!)

– No revealing necklines.  No cleavage whatsoever.  (Be sure to check the view from above.) – Midriff must be covered – No strapless or halter dresses. No one shoulder straps.  Spaghetti straps are permitted. 

– All areas that are to be covered must be covered with solid fabric, not sheer fabric. 

– No low backs (below the bottom of the shoulder blades) or laces revealing low back.

Ah… thank you ABC for illustrating what we are NOT to have our girls wear for the sake of modesty.  I can now look at Izzy’s dress and note that it would be inappropriate for the Bachelorette – so it’s probably fine for the homeschool dance!
