Simple Women

Outside my window...
Aday in June2011 010
Backyard, a work in progress.  We used to have lush grass in our little back yard - and then we had four boys in a row - the first one was the hardest on everything from furniture to landscaping!

I am thinking...
about the difficult week that just passed.

I ran two wedding rehearsals and two weddings

And I hosted a reception for our choir concert.

Between it all were the swimming lessons.

From the Learning Room...
taking a break this week.

From the kitchen...
Turkey tonight!
I am wearing...
Black athletic pants, and an orange work out top by Danskin.

I am remembering:
For mama, always. I do feel a sense of - I don't know... maybe acceptance since her anniversary has passed.

I am creating...
a nicer backyard. And some ivy around my new tree that is coming today!
Update - it's here!

I am reading...

I am hoping...
to finish swimming lessons this week and kind or relax before my next rehearsal and wedding this weekend.

I am hearing...
the buzz in my ears and the humm of my computer.

Around the house...

My Daily Domestic Clips 06/27/2011 (a.m.)

  • I found this blog called, "Your OB said what?" and it is hysterical what some of these "professionals" actually say to people. But this one is a flat out lie. All three of my successful vaginal deliveries were standing up in a supported squat - those kiddos never would have come out if I had been lying flat on my back. Gravity - it's a wonderful thing. Make sure to read the comments that smart gals have posted in response to this assinine remark.

7-Quick Takes - Whine with cheese

Join Jen and the other Quicktakers over at the Conversion Diary.

Remember that blogging is cheaper than therapy dear reader!

1. After graduation this week I felt a huge let down of relief -as if 1000 pounds had been taken off of my chest. As the mom that just wanted to pay the fee, and show up with her kid to participate in a graduation ceremony, I ended up coordinating and planning a huge chunk of it. It was beautiful, memorable and moving. I hope we made a memory that Sammy and the other graduates will never forget. But while I enjoyed it, I'm glad it is over!

2. Regular readers might also remember that I had coordinated an out-of-town speaker to come speak to my homeschool group 5 days before the graduation. That too was a little stressful (speaker coming from out of town, and hoping to get enough people in to hear him and worried that something would happen to the speaker OR that he might get there and end up just speaking to me and Mr. Pete!) but it turned out well. We had a good turn out (albeit from folks we had invited to come from other support groups)and the speaker did a very nice job. Mr. Pete and I treated him to a nice dinner after the talk.

3. So Tuesday, I turn on my e-mail, hoping to leisurely peruse through the correspondance when a new e-mail showed up asking about the homeschool support group picnic next month and letting me know that some people were thinking of not coming because they didn't like how it was being planned.

Which of course reminded me of an old saying by Rosanne Rosannadanna - It's always something.

4.  Calvin's long-time girlfriend, Sarah is a Gleek!  She loves the show Glee.  So I decided to catch up on the episodes and see what was so special about this series. Season 1 is available streaming for Netflix subscribers.  I think Season 2 is on DVD. But over the past couple of weeks I have been able to at least watch most of season 1.

5.  And I have decided to channel my inner Sue Sylvester.

6.  She would be an outstanding wedding coordinator at our church.  Just thinking about that makes me giggle - which is probably at least a venial sin.

7. One of my favorite Glee mashups so far.

Nativity of John the Baptist

John-the-Baptist-

Today we celebrate the birthday of John the Baptist!

The church only celebrates three birthdays- Jesus, Mary (September 8) and today John the Baptist! The reason is that Jesus and Mary were born without original sin and John the Baptist was baptized in his mother's womb, and so was also born without original sin.

Another interesting observation is that Jesus's birthday is right after the winter solstice when the days are getting longer. John the Baptist is born right after the summer solstice and days will start to shorten. Bringing to mind the bible verse John 3:30: 30 "He must become greater; I must become less.”

I am sharing my diigo links for the feast below. We are having grasshopper pie for dinner - a little more palatable than actual grasshoppers that John ate in the desert! The recipe is in the links!

Feast St. Thomas Moore and St. John Fisher and My Mom.

Today is the feast of St. Thomas Moore and St. John Fisher. St. Thomas is well known to us from the movie A Man for All Seasons, but St. John is an interesting saint as well. I heard blogger and author Stephanie Mann on the radio today and she talked about how St. John had been friends with Henry VII and with Lady Margaret Beaufort (Henry VIII's grandmother). In fact, he said the funeral mass for both of them. He was very close to the family and knew young Henry from boyhood. It amazes me then that Henry VIII so could be so stiff necked in his views that he could have John Fisher executed! But he did. That would be like having one of our beloved parish priests killed over a difference of opinion - it's unthinkable.

*******
Today is also the second anniversary of my mother's death and so I had a mass scheduled and I attended today. I guess two years ago I didn't even realize what feast day it was. Father P. in his homily mentioned how both men really died for the sanctity of marriage and to uphold the supremacy of the pope. At the end of mass we prayed for people who have been divorced or who have gone through annullments, that they can find peace and have grace for going through those difficulties.

As I always try to find the reason for things and why they happen when they do, it suddenly made sense to me why God would call my mother home on this day. Mom had not made a wise marriage choice and she did not have a happy marriage, in fact she spent more time alone than with my father. But she always loved him, she remained loyal to him, she never divorced, she took care of him when he got ill and she grieved his death. So if there was every anyone that suffered for marriage- she did!  I guess that gives her something in common with St. Thomas Moore and St. John Fisher.

Anyway, this is my favorite scene from A Man for All Seasons. I love the wit and the great logic of Thomas Moore in these scenes. Please enjoy!

When A Church Leader Disappoints Us - The Father John Corapi Edition

Gee whiz, this is the second one of these for 2011! I wrote about another priestly downfall back in February.

The first time I heard Father Corapi's story I was mesmerized. A wordly sinner with money and riches who finally humbles himself and comes to Christ- it is a truly great story. So great in fact, that I had my impressionable young sons listen to it as well. If such a great sinner could turn his life around and even become a priest, surely there was hope for the rest of us!

But there were a few red flags flown up for me over the years. I heard it was difficult if almost impossible to get Father Corapi to come to speak because of the cost. That seemed odd to me because my parish had been able to get Scott Hahn and Matthew Kelley as speakers. I wondered why Father Corapi would be so much more?

His appearance changed too from  this

to this

and then this!

All a little troubling.

And then the scandal news and finally this odd announcement from Father Corapi himself. In retrospect, I was glad that I hadn't encouraged my children to follow Father Corapi on EWTN and elsewhere, because I think this latest turn of events might have been very confusing for them.

As parents, looking for role models for our Catholic Children, in the wisdom of the church we really can not do better than the actual saints! For these are men and women who have actually run the ENTIRE RACE, had their lives examined and scrutinized and found to be authentically holy.

Father Corapi had some good things to say. So did Father Euteneuer, but the message gets marred when the messenger falls from grace. And as I've mentioned in past posts, the men and women who are truly in leadership are under constant attack from Satan. Perhaps it shouldn't even surprise me when they mess up - it's probably more miraculous when they don't. But as a mom trying to lead impressionable children, in the future I'm sticking primarily with St. John Vianney, St. John Bosco, Father Damien and the Sts. Theresa
