My Domestic Church Daily Clips 12/01/2009

  • Well at least they're honest! These financial planners answer the question, "How much money do I need to retire?" with, "Keep working!"

    that's what I figured...

    • You might think, then, that doing something about the employment situation would be a top policy priority. But now that total financial collapse has been averted, all the urgency seems to have vanished from policy discussion, replaced by a strange passivity. There’s a pervasive sense in Washington that nothing more can or should be done, that we should just wait for the economic recovery to trickle down to workers.

      This is wrong and unacceptable.

    • Do you really want to be the new "war president"? If you go to West Point tomorrow night (Tuesday, 8pm) and announce that you are increasing, rather than withdrawing, the troops in Afghanistan, you are the new war president. Pure and simple. And with that you will do the worst possible thing you could do -- destroy the hopes and dreams so many millions have placed in you. With just one speech tomorrow night you will turn a multitude of young people who were the backbone of your campaign into disillusioned cynics. You will teach them what they've always heard is true -- that all politicians are alike. I simply can't believe you're about to do what they say you are going to do. Please say it isn't so.

Language arts for high school.

Sam and I have used a variety of sources for high school literature. So far they have all been very helpful and enjoyable for both of us!

In 9th grade Sam was enrolled with Bravewriter's Boomerang series
which he used for the entire year. It was his entire language arts program. We are also working through their Help for High School writing program.

Last year I found a number of study guides online for books I wanted Sam to read for American Literature. Then about midway through the year I found Lightening Literature and Composition for American Literature. We read all the books they suggested, and studied the information on each book and then Sam had a reading assignment for each book. I really felt that he had a good understanding of American Literature as well as exposure to a lot of different authors by the time he was finished.

This year we are moving on with Hewitt's Lightening Literature and Composition for Shakespeare. But for the first part of the year he has enjoyed two online courses from Homeschool Connections. The first was on The Canterbury Tales and the second on King Arthur and Christ. Sam enjoyed both courses and did pretty well on the quizzes for each week's lessons.

Next year I hope to tackle some World Literature and perhaps Christian Classics, but I will be very open to whatever else Homeschool Connections offers next year for its high school students.

Outside my window...

november 2009 041
This is what it sort of looks like around here now.

I am thinking...
about the beautiful Christmas concert I was part of yesterday.  It was beautiful and I really enjoyed myself. Here is a sample of the type of music that we perform. I wish I could work with them more often. Then in two weeks I perform once more with our children's choir, bell choir and adult choir for a Christmas concert as well as Christmas masses.  I am really looking forward to that.

Being involved in music has been such a gift for my family. All of us are involved except for my oldest and Rosie (who is just a little too young yet!) It really puts the focus off of the hustle and bustle and gift buying into a more settled and subdued type of Christmas.  And because of that my children even ask for modest gifts for which I am grateful.

I am thankful for...
every day and that my Mother exposed me to music early and nurtured that in the context of the liturgy.

From the learning rooms...
The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe with Noah and Gabe this week. Sam starts on Huck Finn!

From the kitchen...
Pork- because everyone is tired of poultry!

I am wearing...
Black pants and a white top with a black vest and black shoes- my concert outfit!

I am creating...
Peace within myself. And saying the Serenity prayer especially the part about accepting the things I cannot change.

I am going...
to enjoy my new dining room set!  A few weeks ago I bought a dining room set. It is an antique but very nice with 10 matching chairs!  It can seat up to 14 comfortably- which means 16 or more if you squish together. I also got my mother's china cabinet and buffet out of storage. So it looks like a grown up, beautiful and gracious dining area now.  And that was important to me because I really want to be able to have guests an to serve them comfortably.

I am reading...
Dr. Susan Love's Breast Book:4th Edition 2005
The Divine Office for Dodos: A Step-By-Step Guide to Praying the Liturgy of the Hours

I am hoping...
to be more peaceful and prayerful during this Advent season.  I am also hoping that Calvin will find his way in life.

I am hearing...
buzzing in my ears - again.

Around the house...

teens watching a movie, and little girl playing in the backtround.

A few plans for the rest of the week:
1. Walk or exercise tape every day.
2. Make an appointment to see my own doctor just for a check up.

A picture I am sharing:
My beautiful dining room.

7- Quick Takes Friday- the doing it anyway because there is no 7-Quick takes this week edition.

There is no 7-Quick Takes officially this week. But usually you can - Join Jen and the other Quicktakers over at the Conversion Diary.

1. On Wednesday SLO's doctor called to give her some more bad news. I can't help but wonder if it couldn't have waited until today, or Saturday or even Monday? Medically would it change anything? Why put a damper on the holiday?

2. I am now totally convinced that I pamper Gabe and Sam too much. I have bought into all the research about teenagers needing more sleep. But Sam's girlfriend asked them to go with her to the early bird Black Friday sales and they were both up and out of the house by 5:30 a.m.! When I was a teen I remember many a night studying until midnight and then catching a bus at 6 a.m. I think I'm going to insist on an earlier morning wake up (and a subsequent early evening bedtime!)

3. Took Izzy, Noah and Rosie to the library on Tuesday and they had a special Thanksgiving day craft. They were to make turkeys that looked something like this:
november 2009 034
But Rosie would have none of it! She wasn't going to make a turkey - she was going to make a "girlie chicken" complete with nail polish, bracelet, eyelashes, lipstick and a necklace. Hers looked like this.
november 2009 031
I love 4 year olds!

4. Yesterday Mr. Pete and I got the turkey into the oven by 7 a.m. We went out for a bagel and then we went to mass. Then we went for a walk with the kids in one of our beautiful metro parks. We came back and finished the salad, packed up the deserts and the turkey and headed off to SLO's house for dinner. I really think after this experience I probably could handle catering. It takes a bit more organization but it was actually kind of fun!

5. I keep thinking about O'Reilly's interview with Bishop Tobin. At about 1:20 into the interview the Bishop goes into what it means to be a Catholic.

Right, well, certainly I wouldn't define it that way. I think the church has every right and indeed the obligation to be at the table in these important questions of public policy . And certainly the bishops for a long time now have been involved in the question involving health care and the legislation that's developing, but in lots of other issues, too. And as I've often said if the church, not just the Catholic church, but the religious community, if we don't bring these values, this spiritual vision to these discussions, who else will do that?

But the real important message comes at 2:09 where he actually says:

The most important commitment we can make is to our faith because that defines our relationship with God. Nothing is more important than that. And if your job, your profession, your vocation gets in the way of that, you have to quit your job and save your soul.

O'Reilly seems a bit surprised with that answer.

6.  I think anyone who works with postsurgical patients should have had surgery at some time in their past. It should be a requirement. Because it is obvious to me after how SLO was treated last week after surgery when getting into her room that some caregivers have absolutely no idea what it feels like to have your body cut open!

7.  It snowed last night.

Abraham Lincoln
Originally uploaded by George Eastman House.

Proclamation of Thanksgiving
by the President of the United States of America

The year that is drawing toward its close has been filled with the blessings of fruitful years and healthful skies. To these bounties, which are so constantly enjoyed that we are prone to forget the Source from which they come, others have been added which are of so extraordinary a nature that they can not fail to penetrate and soften even the heart which is habitually insensible to the ever-watchful providence of Almighty God.

In the midst of a civil war of unequaled magnitude and severity, which has sometimes seemed to foreign states to invite and to provoke their aggression, peace has been preserved with all nations, order has been maintained, the laws have been respected and obeyed, and harmony has prevailed everywhere, except in the theater of military conflict, while that theater has been greatly contracted by the advancing armies and navies of the Union.

Needful diversions of wealth and of strength from the field of peaceful industry to the national defense have not arrested the plow, the shuttle, or the ship; the ax has enlarged the borders of our settlements, and the mines, as well of iron and coal as of the precious metals, have yielded even more abundantly than theretofore. Population has steadily increased notwithstanding the waste that has been made in the camp, the siege, and the battlefield, and the country, rejoicing in the consciousness of augmented strength and vigor, is permitted to expect continuance of years with large increase of freedom.

No human counsel hath devised nor hath any mortal hand worked out these great things. They are the gracious gifts of the Most High God, who, while dealing with us in anger for our sins, hath nevertheless remembered mercy.

It has seemed to me fit and proper that they should be solemnly, reverently, and gratefully acknowledged, as with one heart and one voice, by the whole American people. I do therefore invite my fellow-citizens in every part of the United States, and also those who are at sea and those who are sojourning in foreign lands, to set apart and observe the last Thursday of November next as a day of thanksgiving and praise to our beneficent Father who dwelleth in the heavens.
And I recommend to them that while offering up the ascriptions justly due to Him for such singular deliverances and blessings they do also, with humble penitence for our national perverseness and disobedience, commend to His tender care all those who have become widows, orphans, mourners, or sufferers in the lamentable civil strife in which we are unavoidably engaged, and fervently implore the interposition of the Almighty Hand to heal the wounds of the nation and to restore it, as soon as may be consistent with the Divine purposes, to the full enjoyment of peace, harmony, tranquility, and union.

In testimony wherof I have herunto set my hand and caused the seal of the United States to be affixed.

[Signed]
A. Lincoln

The logical fallacies of Chriss Matthews vs. Bishop Tobin

Back in June I discussed the debate between Bill O'Reilly and Joan Walsh over abortion. I thought O'Reilly won because he made the most debate points that went unanswered. But not surprisingly, many liberals felt Walsh won. Further analysis of the responses lead me to believe that in the liberal forums I was reading, a "win" meant making the other person lose his cool and get angry. If that is the litmus test of whether one wins or loses a debate then clearly in the discussion this week between Chris Matthews and Bishop Tobin, the good Bishop was the clear winner. Not once did Bishop Tobin raise his voice or appear angry. Matthews on the other hand was clearly riled.

But I don't think composure is the best test of whether a debate is won or lost. And when I watched this clip it was clear that Chris was depending on a whole stack of logical fallacies to make himself feel better.

In case you don't know Bishop Tobin asked Representative Patrick Kennedy to refrain from taking communion because he is outspokenly against the church's teaching regarding abortion and the right of the unborn to life. And incidentally - it is Kennedy who has decided to take this public. Tobin counseled Kennedy on this privately.

So this is what Chris Matthews was so ticked about when he invited Bishop Tobin to his show.

Matthews starts out the segment with a clip of Senator John F. Kennedy giving his views of his Catholic faith and his role as a politician/public official. This of course is the appeal to authority fallacy. Although, I'm not sure why if Matthews is a Catholic that he thinks Bishop Tobin should accept JFK's views of faith/morals and law as authoritative let alone binding. Kennedy's statement is also being used as a strawman in this case. Bishop Tobin isn't trying to regulate public policy by banning Kennedy from communion, but it is Tobin's job to shepherd Kennedy for the good of his immortal soul and to protect other souls from Kennedy's errors. In fact in Tobin's open letter to Kennedy he states:
Your rejection of the Church’s teaching on abortion falls into a different category – it’s a deliberate and obstinate act of the will; a conscious decision that you’ve re-affirmed on many occasions. Sorry, you can’t chalk it up to an “imperfect humanity.” Your position is unacceptable to the Church and scandalous to many of our members. It absolutely diminishes your communion with the Church.

Congressman Kennedy, I write these words not to embarrass you or to judge the state of your conscience or soul. That’s ultimately between you and God. But your description of your relationship with the Church is now a matter of public record, and it needs to be challenged. I invite you, as your bishop and brother in Christ, to enter into a sincere process of discernment, conversion and repentance.

It’s not too late for you to repair your relationship with the Church, redeem your public image, and emerge as an authentic “profile in courage,” especially by defending the sanctity of human life for all people, including unborn children. And if I can ever be of assistance as you travel the road of faith, I would be honored and happy to do so.
The gist of Matthew's argument comes from then Senator John F. Kennedy's 1960 speech
But because I am a Catholic, and no Catholic has ever been elected President, the real issues in this campaign have been obscured--perhaps deliberately, in some quarters less responsible than this. So it is apparently necessary for me to state once again--not what kind of church I believe in, for that should be important only to me--but what kind of America I believe in.
I believe in an America where the separation of church and state is absolute--where no Catholic prelate would tell the President (should he be Catholic) how to act, and no Protestant minister would tell his parishioners for whom to vote--where no church or church school is granted any public funds or political preference--and where no man is denied public office merely because his religion differs from the President who might appoint him or the people who might elect him.
I believe in an America that is officially neither Catholic, Protestant nor Jewish--where no public official either requests or accepts instructions on public policy from the Pope, the National Council of Churches or any other ecclesiastical source--where no religious body seeks to impose its will directly or indirectly upon the general populace or the public acts of its officials--and where religious liberty is so indivisible that an act against one church is treated as an act against all.

Sure that's a good reference and a very famous quote of course. A little bit of a difference though, I think what the ex-president was talking about was the establishment of a national religion,  In fact what we're trying to do is  not dictate what the public policy should be in the United States from a purely Catholic doctrinal point of view.

What we're trying to do most of all is instill good human values but also have Catholics who are in political office be faithful to the dictates of the church and the dictates of their conscience and the teachings of the church

But Matthews doesn't care about what the Bishop says, he wants the Bishop's policies to line up with.... John F Kennedy!

For Bishop Tobin it is about his responsibility as the bishop to instruct Kennedy and about his relationship with God and saving his immortal soul - all things you don't hear that much in the secular media these days.

In fact Bishop Tobin has been very open about what what his actual bone to pick with Kennedy is all about:
For example, the “Code of Canon Law” says, “Lay persons are bound by an obligation and possess the right to acquire a knowledge of Christian doctrine adapted to their capacity and condition so that they can live in accord with that doctrine.” (Canon 229, #1)
The “Catechism of the Catholic Church” says this: “Mindful of Christ’s words to his apostles, ‘He who hears you, hears me,’ the faithful receive with docility the teaching and directives that their pastors give them in different forms.” (#87)
Or consider this statement of the Church: “It would be a mistake to confuse the proper autonomy exercised by Catholics in political life with the claim of a principle that prescinds from the moral and social teaching of the Church.” (Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, 2002)
There’s lots of canonical and theological verbiage there, Congressman, but what it means is that if you don’t accept the teachings of the Church your communion with the Church is flawed, or in your own words, makes you “less of a Catholic.”

At about 3 minutes in, seeing that Bishop Tobin doesn't care about squaring his views with the late JFK, Matthews changes course and asks Bishop Tobin what he thinks the legislation on abortion should be.

This is the big strawman that Chris Matthews wants to dance with and he keeps trying to force the Bishop to pick up this strawman partner and dance with it as well. At 3:36 Matthews insists that this is about the law and now about morality.  But the truth is Tobin did not privately tell Kennedy not to receive communion because he wasn't passing the correct laws, but rather because Kennedy keeps calling himself a good Catholic while he continues to defy and thumb his nose at the teaching authority of the pope.

Matthews blathers on by himself telling the Bishop what authority he does and doesn't have. I wonder who died and gave Matthews the authority to assign roles to the bishop.  Anyway, in this particular part I wish the Bishop could have just been a tad stronger, but he does a good job of keeping his cool.

I would have said, the penalty should be counseling for a first time offender, fines and jail time after that. Mandatory jail time for abortionists. End of story. Would have shut Matthews down pretty quickly.

For what it's worth, the Bishop's authority doesn't come from the secular law but from the Catholic Church.
He doesn't need the secular law to come down hard on Kennedy, because he has the law of the church. If Kennedy doesn't like it, he can always leave the church. He's practically out anyway.

The end of the interview is a gem. When Matthews does finally let the Bishop back into the discussion he sums up his responsibility as Kennedy's bishop perfectly and then even gets a shot to admonish Matthews to perhaps learn some more about the Catholic faith he too claims to share.

My Dearest Daughter - the meet my grandpa edition!

In 1958 my mother got married and moved across the country. These are the letters written to her, mainly by her mother, between 1958 and 1960. Others in the series are in my del.icio.us file.

This week's letter is written by my mother's father, my grandpa. His name was Calvin and my oldest boy is named for him.

Grandpa Calvin was the second of ten children. He was a farmer, a welder, and sold World Book encyclopedias, but he could fix or build pretty much anything he put his mind to. In this picture he is the second from the left in the back row.
P1010215

In this letter he talks a lot about his mom and siblings (Sam, Ernest, Elmer, Ivan) and a lot about family friends. Elmer worked for World Book Encyclopedias and that comes up in this letter as well.

November 26, 1958

Hi Pete and Maryrose,

Does that sound far off? The Lovers?

This is Pop. How are you?

No, it never showed up so I couldn't shoot a deer! I dressed one out for Paul Hammond - 16 points!

Grandma (He's talking about my great-grandma - his mother) is fine. I was with her a week and did I see (a lot of ) old pictures and eat a lot of food too!

I went up to see Ernest and Sam (his brothers) for Friday and Saturday. Ernest was to go to sea the night the ship Bradley went down. It broke in two and took 33 men with her. There was a funeral mass at Rogers City for the dead. The boat Ernest was to go on was docked until the storm broke. Was your Aunt Fern happy.

I was hunting with Bob (Sam's boy) Saturday morning about nine thirty. I sprained my left ankle so I've been sitting here ever since. Calvin and I each shot four birds and two rabbits. We can have goose while you are here at home.

Two of our young heifers freshened and are they dandy! One had a black angus heifer calf. Is she cute! That may be the start of beef cattle. We are shipping nearly six cans of milk a day now. We are ready to mail the last payment on the farm and we can burn the mortgage when you kids are home.
Calvin and Helen Leckrone
We had turkey for Thanksgiving dinner. I took pumpkin pie out to Harry and Erma (best friends). She is pretty well now again. Harry is interested in a tractor now. He told me he could hardly put harnesses on the horses any more. He has fixed up the house and yard very nice.

Calvin wrote and told you we had sixteen loads of corn. Our picker worked very good. I sold the old husker for $100. Calvin said every Saturday we could hunt rabbits but we had to husk corn.

I know this letter is misspelled, hit and missed cause that is the way I think. I am going to help fix a house for a woman and nine children. Her husband left her. St. Vincent DePaul group will do the work. If you have much trouble with the station wagon put in a set of new spark plugs and points. I'll try and get some for you.

We winterized the tractors today. They all need work badly. Did you know your Uncle (Elmer) lives near South Bend Indiana? They promoted a young man past him and was still good old Elmer. So he raised his voice. Ivan took him in. I think he needs more training to be a manager. Boy that made me sore and I haven't sold a book since. I'm going to try tomorrow again.

It is snowing today. They say we are due for four inches. Well I didn't do so bad did I!

Keep your chins up. Love and the very best,
Dad

Simple Woman

Outside my window...
It looks like it is supposed to be cold, but it is surprisingly, unseasonably warm outside. Mr. Pete just took me out for a bagel and I didn't even wear a jacket.

I am thinking...
about SLO's surgery and everything we've been through in the past couple of days. First of all SLO is amazing! After her double mastectomy on Friday night she was in a lot of pain but she was up the next morning and she figured since she could get up, she could go home. And she did! Not even 24 hours from the start of her procedure. I was very impressed. The next day she even washed her own hair. I think she is going to recover just fine from the sheer determination to do so.

Waiting in the waiting room wasn't bad at all. Dick turned out to be a very funny guy, talks more than I do, and we bonded pretty quickly. He literally was the life of the party. Bill and Bob didn't say much but everyone got along fine because we all shared a common interest - SLO

I am also very impressed with Slo's kids who are amazing young women and men and were great advocates and caregivers for their mom. What a great support system.

I am thankful for...
all of my family and friends near and far who helped us through the past week and will be there in the weeks and months to come.

From the learning rooms...
The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe with Noah and Gabe this week. Sam continues on  a study of the King Arthur and Christ next week.

From the kitchen...
Cheesy chicken and rice - and a 28 pound turkey in my freezer that is about to be taken down and put into the sink. .

I am wearing...
Black sweat pants and a green sweater I treated myself too.

I am creating...
Thanksgiving dinner - the bulk of which will be cooked at my house and then transported over to SLO's.  It feels like what a catering business must be like - thinking of everything that needs to happen so that we don't forget anything.

I am going...
to be playing my flute a lot more in the next few weeks. Had a rehearsal last night that went fairly well.

I am reading...
Dr. Susan Love's Breast Book:4th Edition 2005
The Divine Office for Dodos: A Step-By-Step Guide to Praying the Liturgy of the Hours

I am hoping...
Donny Osmond wins Dancing with the Stars!

I am hearing...
buzzing in my ears - again.

Around the house...

Kids sleeping, and some kids rustling around.

A few plans for the rest of the week:
1. Walk or exercise tape every day.
2. Finish inventory on my Mom's estate for the attorney - ugh - why do I keep putting this off!
3.  Visit the doctor with my loved one.
