My Daily Domestic Diigolet 06/01/2009

My final points toPilgrim's Daughterhere.

"The lesson for us is not that we should worship and honor Mary as a Divine being, but that we should emulate her submission to the will of God, come what may."

Actually Catholic teaching agrees with that. We don't worship Mary and we certainly do not honor her as a divine being. The church does not teach that Mary was divine and most of the faith- as it relate to Mary surrounds emulating her fiat, her yes to the Will of God.

So basically, in a nutshell, we are all in agreement on this.

That was easy.

"If Jesus had come to earth with his God nature, there was no way He could have died. "

God can do anything.

"He laid aside His immortality and took upon Himself mortality for our sakes"

Once again I wince in my seat because this sounds very much like a heresy. Sorry but it does.

I believe Mary did carry God in her womb, but the point is that Mary was created by Him before He became a man in her womb (by the power of the Triune God of which He is a member)

And on this point, once again Catholics agree.

so SCRIPTURE NEVER CALLS HER THE MOTHER OF GOD BECAUSE THIS IMPLIES DIVINITY ON HER PART.

Well there are lots of assumptions here. The scripture is silent on a lot of things and if you are going to live your life based on a "simple read" of scripture, I'll bet we could find a lot of things you do and believe that are not a part of scripture.

Secondly, you're suggesting that the term Mother of God is not used because the writers thought that 21st century Protestants might think it means she was divine. I keep telling you Jennie that you need to move from where you are to understand other paradigms and frankly, since we have the words of the early church fathers that existed BEFORE the canon of the bible did, I think your conclusion is severely flawed.

For conversion stories may I suggest this, this and this.

Pentecost

People in our parish have worn red for Pentecost for a number of years. And so we did today as well. The kids usually enjoy that.

This year will be a little different for us. Calvin isn't here. But Sarah's mom contacted me through Facebook and I gave them the link for mass times where they are. Turns out the cathedral for the diocese is right there! It would be pretty cool to go to Pentecost at the cathedral I think. We'll see.

Mom is still in nursing care and I'm wondering how much longer she will be allowed to stay there before we have to make some other difficult decisions. Mama has a beautiful red dress that she would wear yearly for Pentecost. The year Izzy's first communion was on Pentecost she wore it.

And we are putting our garden in today.

Frankie's mom

Long time readers might remember the little girl in my side bar, Frankie. Frankie was born with severe congenital cardiac deformities and her mother bravely decided to carry her to term. She was born and lived a few years, loved by all who knew her. Her death, although expected, was heartbreaking.

Well Frankie is about to get a baby brother! Her mom is due very soon and may even deliver tomorrow. Please keep Frankie's mom and little brother, and the entire family in your prayers today and this coming week!

Today is my last day in my "40s." I am holding on to that era with the very tips of my finger nails, knowing full well that part of my life will be gone forever and Monday I will be... gasp!! 50.

I should also mention that for the milestones of turning 30 and 40, I was with child. This time no. And I really will always miss that part of my life. I enjoyed having babies, and growing babies and delivering babies (Ok, maybe not that part so much). I visit blogs now where women are having babies and I still ache to be among them (and not so very long ago, I was!)

I guess I truly am an adult now. You would think being the mother of 7 would have made me feel all grown up, but actually it has been the decline and terminal illness of my mother that has done the trick. I remember mama as young and pretty, taking me to dance lessons and flute lessons and band practice and buying me clothes and having my 10th birthday party and all of that stuff. She was the one I always called for advice or just to talk to. She was mostly always on my side. And slowly but surely she is fading away and I will be the next generation up.

Mr. Pete has already gone through this. Both his mom and dad have passed. And although he is still one of the little brothers in his own family of brothers and sisters, in my family, the clan he married into, he has become the default patriarch! My grandfather and father are dead, my brother-in-law left - Mr. Pete has become the alpha male and readily accepted the position.

It's long road from being someone's little girl to the wife of the patriarch, and dare I say matriarch of my own little family. I kind of ignored it for years but 50 makes it impossible to ignore any longer. It's a very grown up number. 50 denotes wisdom and experience and hopefully some level of "having it together."

As a Catholic, I have spent the last 20 years, since I've had children, re-learning my faith and teaching it to the kids. It has been exciting and even fun. But what I haven't done is develop that deep inner prayer life that my mother has. Which is not to say that I don't pray, because I do, but it hasn't been the deep, restful, restorative prayer that I am starting to yearn for. "Dear God let me get through another day!" when the laundry is piled up and the bills is the type of prayer I'm most familiar with!! and at 50 I'm hoping to shut up and be still and know God.

The other thing you realize at 50 is that with any luck, there might be 50 more years, but they will be challenging in ways I can't imagine yet. And they will eventually end with death. I always tell Mr. Pete that our marriage will end with one of us dead and the other one heartbroken and sad. I've seen it. I know that to be true. But rather than focusing on the inevitable I want this birthday to remind me that everyday is a gift and a blessing and that I have to redouble my efforts to treat them like that. Because in 10 years, I'll be 60... and looking back fondly at the era that was my 50s. And starting tomorrow, I want to enjoy, live and learn all that the 50s have in store for me.

What do My Domestic Church readers buy from Amazon?

Amazon recently deposited my quarterly earnings into my checking account. It was enough to cover 1 1/2 guitar lessons for Sam!! So thank you everyone who buys from Amazon through this site. If I can ever figure out Youtube maybe I'll post Sam and his band playing. Or maybe me and Sam playing the first part of Stairway to Heaven, which is kind of dorky but a lot of fun.

Anyway, I thought the kinds of things you guys buy was interesting. Someone bought a Valley 90590 Deluxe Hitch Mounted Basket Cargo Carrier. I think that might be my sister? But I could be wrong. I'll keep my eye open for that at sis's house next time I'm over because I can't imagine what a Basket Cargo Carrier carries!

Someone else bought Whitney Design 3000 30-Line Outdoor Parallel-Style Clothes Dryer with Aluminum Arms. I remember one of my grandma's friends use to have something like this when I was a little girl! What's old is new again!!

Someone else bough a PlayStation 2!

I laughed out loud when I saw this: The Bad Catholic's Guide to Good Living: A Loving Look at the Lighter Side of Catholic Faith, with Recipes for Feast and Fun (Bad Catholic's guides) I wonder what recipes? I'm always on the look out for Food Fun for Feasts!

Aww... and someone bought one of these too! Pugs (Complete Pet Owner's Manual)

Anyway, as always thanks so much for your support and encouragement. I sincerely appreciate it.

1. I got a nice note on Facebook from Sarah's mom, giving all of the information that was difficult to extract from Calvin - like where they were staying. But it sounds as if they have great accommodations and the ride down wasn't too tough. You know, Calvin was homeschooled until 8th grade. He has since then, swam on a public school swim team, worked at two jobs, finished an EMT program and now he is going on trips with friends that he made on his own. So I don't get what all the commotion about homeschoolers not being socialized is about. If Calvin is my exhibit A - he's doing pretty well.

2. A funny I heard the kids say this morning. We were doing math and Noah had the following problem.
Three classrooms had 26, 24, and 27 students respectively. What was the average number of students in each classroom?

Noah read through this and asked, "What does 'respectively' mean?

To which Izzy replied, "It means they aren't allowed to be mean or yell at the students!"

sigh...I love vocabulary.

3. We were walking into the store today and I noticed that Rosie has some pretty auburn highlights in her hair.

"Rosie, you have red in your hair!"

To which Rosie threw her hands over her head and shrieked a blood curdling scream!

"No, it's alright Rosie!" I reassured her, "The red is supposed to be there. It's very pretty!"

Reassured, Rosie smiled and kept walking but then she asked, "How did the red get on my hair mama?"

"God put it there sweetie."

"Oh!!!" Rosie smiled and nodded knowingly, "He's a pretty nice guy!!"

4. I had some play time here. It's always amusing to me when sola scriptura Christians try to persuade me to their point of view from scripture, when I've already mentioned that I reject sola scriptura. The syrupy, "If they'd open their hearts to the Holy Spirit... blah blah blah is a turn off for me to.

I dunno. I think it's more fun to debate Progressive Catholics - at least the guidelines are more clear.

On the other hand as I approach this big half century mark, I am finding less and less interest in apologetics. I'm kind of at a point where I believe, what I believe and I know what I believe, and if you don't, you're just wrong. LOL! Which doesn't mean we can't be friends or even friendly, but I'll have less tolerance for anything else. I'm also happy with my comfortable shoes!

5. Mr. Pete went to visit Mom at the nursing home yesterday and set up her remote control for her. She was happily clicking away when he left. It's pretty clear she was never going to be able to get up to change the channels and so why not let her have this little pleasure.

6. We had a pretty decent homeschool week despite everything. I have a plan that includes working our butts off until our assessment and then take a few weeks in August off - contingent of course on how far the kids get on their math!

7. We finished Because of Winn-Dixie today! An absolutely charming, funny book that we spent way too much time on today just because we couldn't bear to put it down! An excellent summer read and, I might add that although the protagonist is a girl, my boys, ages 13 and 11, LOVED this book.

From my e-mail

Two young boys walked into a pharmacy one day, picked out a box of tampons and proceeded to the checkout counter.

The man at the counter asked the older boy, 'Son, how old are you?' 'Eight', the boy replied.
The man continued, 'Do you know what these are used for?'
The boy replied, 'Not exactly, but they aren't for me. They're for him. He's my brother. He's four.

We saw on TV that if you use these, you would be able to swim, play tennis and ride a bike. Right now, he can't do none of those'.

Small Successes

FaithButton

1. I think I am finally learning to listen. My mother has not been eating and not wanting to move out of bed. I heard her but I wasn't really listening. Because I want her to eat. I want her to get out of bed, go to the bathroom, go to the dining room, and move into assisted living so that she can have her life back, and so that I can have my Mom back. But after doing more reading on the topic, I've started to see that maybe Mama knows best for herself and her body. She doesn't eat because her body doesn't need the nourishment. She doesn't move because she is starting to go into herself preparing for death. Probably one of my biggest successes this week has been just coming to terms with that reality.

2. Calvin left on vacation with his girlfriend and her family for ten days. And I didn't cry, I didn't try to passive/aggressively keep him home. I gave him a hug, told him to be safe, and have fun. Huge for me, because I'm not really wild about him morphing into this other family like this. But I guess this is part of letting him grow up. He is missing my birthday though. My BIG birthday...and Rosie's 4th birthday! Trying not to be sad about that as well. sniff...

3. So to end on an upbeat - I applied to be part of the Blogher network back in October of 2008 and I FINALLY got accepted and got my code. I'm really quite happy about it. Cecily, Barbara Curtis, and Heather inspired me to try for it. So I am hopeful for a long and fruitful relationship with them.

I'd also like to thank all of you who have bought things from Amazon through My Domestic Church. You guys bought more than $500 worth of stuff!! and I made a little money from that too. Thanks so much!

How Jon and Kate can save their marriage.

I watched the highly anticipated Jon and Kate Plus 8 Premiere last night. As a recap, Jon has recently been spotted partying with a young woman without his wedding ring on. Tabloids have also written that Kate is having some type of a relationship with her body guard. Last night, instead of Jon and Kate sitting together on the familiar couch, they sat individually complaining, whining, and crying about the state of their marriage as they prepared for their sextuplets' fifth birthday party. What a mess.

I tend to be a hopeless romantic. I think most marriages can be saved if both parties want to save them. And judging by what Jon and Kate said about and to each other just last year, they can still save their marriage!

First of all, I think if I were them I'd watch this wedding video a few more times and talk about what their written vows meant to them then and now.

I'd suggest they also get a hold of the movie, Fireproof and perhaps even work through the Fireproof program together under the guidance of their clergyman.

Finally I would hope that they would ask, "How do the Duggars do it?" Jim and Michelle Duggar are older, have been married longer and have more kids! Plus, they know what it is like to have a reality t.v. show on TLC.

I see a number of things they could do like the Duggars right away that might help their marriage.
1. Don't go out of the house to party with young females. Jim Bob would never do that. Just sayin.
2. When the Duggars do a book tour, they all do it, or Michelle and Jim Bob go together. You'd never see Michelle Duggar going off alone on a book tour with a handsome body guard.
3. Less is more. The Duggars go out to Goodwill and yard sales. They try to save money as much as they can. Jon and Kate do ultra expensive birthday parties and buy lots of junk at Toys R Us. Maybe if they economized more they wouldn't feel like they had to do this reality show that is starting to drive the wedge in their marriage.
4. Kate should maybe spend a little less time on her appearance and more time on being nice to Jon. Michelle Duggar dresses plainly and simply and treats her husband with love and respect, and he reciprocates. I think there has to be a big priority shift.

Had some fun with fallacies over here.

Last year on Visits to Candyland, I wrote some posts based on Scott Hahn's book, Hail Holy Queen.

This is the one about the customs of in that time and culture of  honoring the Queen Mother , and this one about Mary as the Christ Bearer and analogous to The Arc of the Covenant. Very appropriate reads for this month of May.

Also I found this comparison of Mary to the Actual Arc of the Covenant:
Golden Box: Ark of the Old Covenant Mary: Ark of the New Covenant
The ark traveled to the house of Obed-edom in the hill country of Judea (2 Sam. 6:1–11). Mary traveled to the house of Elizabeth and Zechariah in the hill country of Judea (Luke 1:39).

Dressed as a priest, David danced and leapt in front of the ark (2 Sam. 6:14). John the Baptist—of priestly lineage—leapt in his mother’s womb at the approach of Mary (Luke 1:41).

David asks, "How can the ark of the Lord come to me?" (2 Sam. 6:9). Elizabeth asks, "Why is this granted me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me?" (Luke 1:43).

David shouts in the presence of the ark (2 Sam. 6:15). Elizabeth "exclaimed with a loud cry" in the presence of the Mary (Luke 1:42).

The ark remained in the house of Obed-edom for three months (2 Sam. 6:11). Mary remained in the house of Elizabeth for three months (Luke 1:56).

The house of Obed-edom was blessed by the presence of the ark (2 Sam. 6:11). The word blessed is used three times; surely the house was blessed by God (Luke 1:39–45).

The ark returns to its home and ends up in Jerusalem, where God’s presence and glory is revealed in the temple (2 Sam. 6:12; 1 Kgs. 8:9–11). Mary returns home and eventually ends up in Jerusalem, where she presents God incarnate in the temple (Luke 1:56; 2:21–22).

I continued to be awed and inspired by the deep richness of our Catholic Faith.

Tomorrow is Memorial Day and in honor of that special holiday I 'd like to share this story:

A friend of mine shared this story about her father. He was a private during World War II. He always carried a rosary with him and although he saw some fierce battle and many of his friends were wounded or killed, he came home relatively unscathed.

My friend told me that his group was camping in a particularly spot in Europe. They knew that the Germans saw them and snipers regularly took shots at them. They were quite some distance from fresh water and so once a week, a soldier would be chosen to go out and fill up the buckets for the men to have water for the day. Most of the time the chosen soldier wouldn't last the week because he would be shot by a German sniper.

When it was my friend's dad's turn to get the water  he stood up, walked straight and tall, and slowly went to the water and back. He did this every day for a week and the German's didn't take a single shot at him.  It was as if he was telling them that he knew he was at their mercy and that he accepted that, but he was just going to try to do his job and whatever happened was up to them.

The next week a new guy tried to run, weave and dodge his way to the watering spot.  He was shot dead before he was even half way there.

************************
P1010346Yesterday I went to Walmart and the Veterans were out there selling their poppies. I shared with one of them that my father-in-law had been a veteran.  He fought with General Patton.  In Africa a bomb burst over head and he took a lot of shrapnel in his back including pieces around his heart that eventually killed him 30 years later.  He spent a lot of time in the hospital overseas recovering,  and that is how he met my mother-in-law.   Anyway, because of his injuries he was declared 100% disabled, but he came back to the states, married and fathered nine children.

The gentleman vet I shared this with started laughing so hard I thought he would quit breathing.

"100% diabled....hahahahahahahah.... and fathered 9 children!!!"

When I came out he was still chuckling about it.  So I told him, "and my husband was #8, " which set off another round of laughter.   I'm glad he enjoyed that little anecdote so much!

Have a great Memorial Day!
