Besides graduating with our homeschool group, Calvin participated in the graduation exercises provided by his digital high school as well. Readers might remember that this almost didn’t happen, because Calvin’s girlfriend and her family had invited him to spend the week with them in sunny South Carolina! Apparently the lure of the sun and surf was more attractive to Cal than donning cap and gown to matriculate with his fellow digital school graduates. But the fates stepped in and there was a death in their family so the vacation was postponed. So quite literally, someone had to die before Calvin would go through with this ceremony!

Last Wednesday, his last day of classes, many of Calvin’s friends and faculty encouraged him to come to graduation. They were all glad to see him last night.

It was quite a bit different from the homeschool graduation experience. This was held in a high school auditorium.

The graduates wore caps and gowns.

The superintendent of schools gave the graduation address, which was very upbeat and encouraging. And of course they walked across the stage to pick up their diplomas.

The crowd was more…diverse than at the homeschool ceremony as well. There was a lot of whooping and hollering from the crowd when someone walked across the stage.

The lady behind me yellowed, “That’s my baby!” when her daughter picked up her diploma. There were more high heeled sparkly shoes on the graduates than I saw during the entire Sex in the City Movie! But it was a fun crowd and a festive atmosphere.

One of Calvin’s counselors thanked us for all of the work we went through to get Calvin on the swim team! More on that saga here. That change in law opened a lot of opportunities up for their students and just recently the school board (with many different members)voted to change their official policy on their digital school and extracurricular activities. How far we’ve come!

So now it is really over. Calvin has to get his paperwork together to apply to a local EMT program. His immediate goals are to save $50,000 and travel to Europe. (It’s good to dream!)
