I didn’t make too big a deal out of this on the blog last month (because of Easter and all of that!) but last month, Mr. Pete turned 50! All of his older siblings took much delight in sending him birthday cards to emphasize that fact! (all with happiness and good nature of course!).

I look at Mr. Pete and I think he could pass for a guy in his early 40s. Apparently I’m not the only one who thinks so! Last week they had “guess how old Pete is” day at work and quite a few of his customers were surprised that he had hit the 5 0 milestone! (and even more were surprised to here that he also has a 2 year old!)

I think it’s because Mr. Pete laughs all the time, and is mostly in a good mood.He is getting some “wrinkles” but they are in all the places you want wrinkles to be if you’re going to be smiling a lot. I think you can just look in his face and just generally see that he is a pleasant, friendly person.

Nonetheless…50… wow.

While I have been generally willing myself to go into our basement and do my FIRM workout tapes, my heart has been aching to go outside and do some walking. The thing is, although I love the “hood,” I don’t necessarily like walking by myself here! So last week while I was talking about how much I just wanted to start taking long walks for fitness, Mr. Pete said unexpectedly that he would like to come along! And so we have!

I mentioned yesterday that we have a nice 3 mile route (with a good size hill included) and we’ve been able to walk it with only medium discomfort, in an hour. We could probably go a bit faster, but we have to wait for traffic lights and avoid some nasty dogs. Sometimes that slows us down.

In just three walks, Mr. Pete dropped three pounds. Not bad for the first week. But the real benefit is how much time we have been able to talk! He gives me his take on the news, and what’s going on at work. I tell him about blogging, things going on in the hood, and how the kids are doing with their school work. It has really been nice to have 60 solid minutes just to TALK TO EACH OTHER. Working up a sweat and getting in some cardio is an extra bonus!

We plan to add some distance over the weekend. Our goal is to get up to a 5 mile walk and maybe get some pedometers. I still have some time before I see 50. It’ would be great if we could be fit and fab (and have some fun) at 50 together!
