Yesterday afternoon, my 9-year-old Noah was playing with two of his friends down at the corner of our street. He heard someone call for help loudly several times, but he couldn’t see who it was. After a few minutes the door of the house across from where he was playing opened up and my neighbor came out with blood all over her face and down her front. She was still screaming for help. Noah and his friend ran over to her and then the three of them made the decision that they needed to find a phone for help as soon as possible. They back to the little friend’s house and called 911. Help arrived within minutes and Noah ran home to get me.

It seems this lady’s 19 year old son shot her. Noah says he did not hear the shot, nor did he see the shooter. I have no idea what happened or why. The police spent a good amount of time walking up and down the street looking for this kid and as of now I do not know if they caught him or not. He doesn’t have money or a car so it’s likely he will turn up soon.

This lady, Shayla, is just very sweet. She always waves to me when we pass on the street. When my children went over to the church programs she always made sure they were included and had something to eat. She was always praising God. Noah says that although he was pretty sure her wound was in the head because of the blood, she was walking and talking, so I think that is a good sign. I hope to find out more today.

My oldest son knew Shayla’s son. They have tossed a football a few times back and forth. Calvin says he is just a regular kid and was pretty nice to talk to. I can’t imagine what went wrong.

I was very proud of Noah and his friends. They didn’t freak out, they thought about getting help and they knew how to do it! For 9-year-olds I think they did a great job. Noah had that troubled look on his face before he went to bed last night. I think it upset him a lot, and understandably so. I’ll try to talk to him about it today.

Police are investigating a domestic disturbance Monday night that left an Akron mother wounded.

(Update – I learned from one of my neighbors that Shayla has lost an eye and has some very serious injuries but she is a strong woman and a fighter. Please keep her in your prayers.)

(Update – Allen was captured safely and is in custody.)
