My second son is being confirmed this January and is in the process of deciding on a confirmation name.

My husband’s confirmation name is Linus. He chose it because he wanted something different than the usual Mark, John, Matthew etc. A few years ago he gave a talk to the confirmation candidates about what his confirmation name came to mean to him later in life. Linus was the second pope. He took the job after St. Peter was crucified upside down. The bravery of Linus stepping forward for the job after the demise of his predecessor was something Mr. Pete finds to be very inspiring.

My oldest son Calvin chose the name Damien, after Father Damien the leper. Father Damien was a young man when he willingly volunteered to work with the Lepers of Molokai, knowing that he could contract the disease and die himself, which is what eventually happened. I think that selfgiving and selflessness is what impressed Calvin.

Sam is leaning towards St. Tarsisius, another brave male saint who gave his life to protect Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament.

So we were sitting around the table talking about confirmation and confirmation names and of these brave saints and their heroic deeds when my little daughter asked if there were any brave women saints. We then talked a bit about St. Joan of Arc and St. Apollonia and some of the other brave women when a light went off in my daughter’s head and she asked,

“Mommy, what’s your constipation name?”

sigh…
