New law to affect charter students

Associated Press

COLUMBUS – Gov. Bob Taft allowed a bill to become law without his signature Friday that permits students attending district-sponsored, online charter schools to participate in extra-curricular activities.

The charter-school part of the bill is the result of a dispute that started in Akron when school board members refused to allow a student enrolled in the district’s Internet-based charter school to swim at Firestone High School.

Rep. Kevin Coughlin, R-Cuyahoga Falls, added language to the legislation that would allow students like Akron’s Calvin LaVictoire to take part in sports and other activities in their home districts.

Taft’s objection to the bill concerned another issue that pertained to county and township zoning.

The bill will become law in 90 days, which will be too late for LaVictoire, a freshman, to swim for Firestone this year. But he could join the team during the next school year.
