The Barrister Breaks it Down!

In case you weren’t keeping score:

1) A canon lawyer has filed a Criminal Complaint in the ecclesiastical court of the Archdiocese of Boston, accusing John Kerry of heresy and causing harm to the faith.

2) Only the Archdiocese (in this case, the one in which the purported excommunicant is officially domiciled) can issue a writ of excommunication.

3) The Archdiocese of Boston has NOT ruled upon the Complaint.

4) The canon lawyer ALSO wrote to the Vatican requesting clarification on canonical law with respect to the issue heresy; specifically, whether a Catholic politician’s public and obstinate support of abortion is heresy, and whether such heresy renders the purported heretic automatically excommunicated from the Church.

5) At the specific request of a Vatican official, a well-respected Dominican theologian examined the questions outlined in #4 and answered in the affirmative on both questions, with an excellent explanation of canon law and its application to these issues.
