This case against the pregnant woman who refused a C-section is somewhat worrisome. I heard on the radio today that they are charging her and going for life in prison.

Now, I don’t agree with her choice. There were obvious signs of fetal distress. The surgery probably would have saved the baby that died.

What concerns me is how this case will affect other pregnant mothers and if they too will be pressured into having C-sections against their will. I know how vulnerable you can be as a laboring mom, especially as a first timer. But I also know that many Ob’s in this law-suit-happy society opt for the C-section over other noninvasive ways of delivering babies. And why not? Juries don’t tend to convict for performing a C-section. C-sections are reimbursed at a higher rate and they can be easily scheduled. I can just see mom’s being threatened unnecessarily with incarceration whenever the medical staff would rather do a Cesarean over a vaginal birth.
